Overview
Encompix is ERP for engineer-to-order manufacturing: custom machinery, capital equipment, one-off systems, where every order is its own project. Project costing, milestone billing, bills of materials that keep changing, and a hard link between engineering and production are the disciplines it was built around. The installed base is active. The marketing presence under Aptean has visibly narrowed, and that belongs in any evaluation.
The company behind it
Encompix was founded in 1992 in Cincinnati, Ohio, and spent its independent years focused entirely on engineer-to-order manufacturing. Made2Manage Systems of Indianapolis acquired it in 2006. That business operated as Consona Corporation and merged with CDC Software in 2012 to form Aptean, which has carried the product ever since. As of mid-2026, the dedicated Encompix product URL returns Aptean's general Industrial Manufacturing ERP page, which centers on the Made2Manage product line and does not mention Encompix by name. Third-party review portals still list Aptean Encompix ERP as available, and no formal end-of-life announcement has been published. Read together, those signals describe a product kept alive for its installed base while new-business marketing consolidates around other Aptean manufacturing lines.
Functional scope
Project management and project costing span the quote-to-cash cycle. Milestone billing and revenue recognition handle long-running jobs. Bills of materials can change while the job is already in production, which is the defining ETO challenge and the reason make-to-stock logic breaks here. Engineering change management and CAD integration through CADLink tie the design office to purchasing and the shop floor. Purchasing, inventory, shop floor control, and financials all hang off projects rather than off anonymous stock orders.
Best-fit companies
Small and midsize ETO manufacturers in North America: custom machine builders, capital equipment producers, plant and systems integrators. These businesses live from accurate job costing and disciplined change management, and generic make-to-stock ERP fits them badly.
Deployment and pricing
On-premises has been the traditional model, with hosted and cloud options available through Aptean. No published pricing; every quote is individual. Put roadmap and support commitments in writing as part of the commercial discussion, not after it.
Where it wins, where it loses
The functional substance is real. Project costing, evolving BOMs, and CAD connectivity earned Encompix its reputation, and none of that stopped working. What changed is the strategic picture: the dedicated product page absorbed into Aptean's general industrial manufacturing marketing, no public roadmap statements, and no declared end-of-life either. That combination is uncertainty, not a death notice, but uncertainty has a price at signature time.
For current customers the sensible move is clarifying support horizons now and mapping data migration paths early, whether the destination is Aptean's Made2Manage-based Industrial Manufacturing ERP or a third-party ETO system. For a new buyer with genuine ETO requirements, Encompix is more useful as a benchmark for what to demand from other vendors during an ERP selection than as a default shortlist entry. Buying into a product whose vendor will not put a roadmap on paper is a risk that functional depth alone does not offset.
