What Deltek ComputerEase is
Job costing and construction accounting for small and midsize American contractors, with payroll, project management, and field data capture attached. The typical buyer is a residential builder, commercial general contractor, or specialty trade that has hit the ceiling of a generic small-business accounting package: no retainage, no certified payroll, no real job costing. ComputerEase has been working on exactly that problem in the US construction market for more than four decades.
Company and product background
The product started in Cincinnati, Ohio, in the early 1980s and spent most of its life as an independent construction software vendor. In 2019 Deltek, the Herndon, Virginia provider of software for project-based businesses, acquired it, and it has traded as Deltek ComputerEase since. Deltek itself has belonged to the industrial technology group Roper Technologies (NYSE: ROP) since 2016. Inside that portfolio the contractor line stays distinct from Deltek's professional services and government contracting ERPs. Vendor figures put the installed base at more than 4,000 US contractors.
Functional scope
Real-time job costing wired into construction accounting forms the core: general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, committed cost tracking, work-in-progress reporting, retainage management, AIA progress billing, and time-and-material billing. Construction payroll with compliance reporting runs in-house or as a payroll service.
Purchase order and subcontract management, equipment tracking and inventory, service management, CRM, and payments processing round out the suite. Field apps capture time and receipts from the job site, AI-based receipt recognition included, and a Procore integration connects field project management to the financials.
Typical customers
Specialty trades lead the base: electrical, mechanical, plumbing. Commercial and residential builders and heavy civil firms follow. Small contractors and mid-market firms each account for roughly half of the users. This is US software for the US market; international requirements sit outside its scope.
How it is sold
Deltek markets cloud hosting with monthly billing first, though on-premises editions for smaller and client/server installations remain available. No prices are published. Month-to-month terms sound flexible in the sales meeting, but a subscription and an on-premises purchase distribute cost very differently across years, so put both through the ERP TCO calculator and compare on a multi-year horizon.
Bottom line for buyers
ComputerEase earns its shortlist place through depth in two areas, job costing and compliant construction payroll, at a price point aimed at firms that would be an afterthought to enterprise construction suites. Deltek's US sales and support organization behind it is a real plus when a payroll run breaks on a Friday afternoon.
The label matters, though. This is a construction accounting system with project and field extensions, not a full ERP: manufacturing, distribution, and estimating depth on par with dedicated tools are absent, and a glance at what a complete ERP system covers shows the gap. Since 2019 the roadmap has been set inside a large corporate portfolio, so ask Deltek what is planned for the contractor line specifically, with dates attached.
