Overview
Epicor Vision is a distribution ERP for the North American automotive aftermarket. Purchasing, inventory, pricing, sales, customer management, e-commerce, and financials run in one system, built around real-time visibility across warehouses and branches. Some of the larger aftermarket distribution businesses in the United States run on it, and the customer base extends into heavy-duty and appliance parts.
Where Epicor Vision comes from
The lineage runs through one of the oldest names in aftermarket technology. Triad Systems was founded in the early 1970s to serve automotive parts wholesalers, renamed itself Activant Solutions in 2003, and merged into Epicor Software Corporation in 2011. Through that heritage Epicor has served the US aftermarket for more than five decades. The company is headquartered in Austin, Texas, and has been majority-owned by private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier and Rice since 2020, with CVC joining as a significant co-investor in 2024. One clarification belongs early in any evaluation: Epicor Vision has nothing to do with Davisware Vision, a field service product now owned by ECI Software Solutions. The shared name is coincidence.
Core functionality
Back-office automation, inventory planning and forecasting, advanced pricing and margin management, integrated CRM, business analytics, and financial management make up the core. B2B and B2C e-commerce tools let distributors sell to installer customers and to consumers online. EDI automation covers purchase orders, advance ship notices, and invoicing. Two outside connections carry weight in this market: the GCommerce Virtual Inventory Cloud for special-order fulfillment, and the Indago warehouse management system for warehouse optimization.
Who buys it
Automotive aftermarket parts distributors, heavy-duty and commercial vehicle parts distributors, and appliance parts distributors, typically multi-location wholesale operations in the United States and Canada. Epicor names established regional and national distributors as reference customers in both the light-vehicle and heavy-duty segments. Smaller single-store jobbers are served by other Epicor aftermarket products rather than by Vision.
How it is sold
Two deployment models are on the table: on premises, or a cloud deployment hosted on Microsoft Azure, which Epicor promotes with single sign-on, enhanced security, and disaster recovery. Pricing is not published. Licensing and implementation are quoted individually through the Epicor sales organization.
Editorial verdict
Vision earns its standing with aftermarket-specific depth: cataloging and program-group connectivity, EDI automation, and special-order networks that horizontal distribution ERPs do not ship out of the box. Midsize to large parts distributors with several locations are the sweet spot, and for them the case against a generic distribution suite is strong. A single-location operation should probably not be in this sales process at all, because both the scope and the buying cycle are sized for companies several times larger. Two things to settle before signing: which Epicor product line matches your tier of the aftermarket, since the company sells more than one system into this channel, and whether the third-party review you are reading actually concerns Epicor Vision or the unrelated Davisware product. For structuring the comparison against other distribution ERPs, see the ERP selection guide.
