What Deltek Vantagepoint is

Vantagepoint is a project-based ERP for firms that sell time and expertise, above all architecture, engineering, and consulting practices. One database carries the whole project lifecycle, from business development and pipeline through resource planning, project execution, billing, and firm-wide financials. Its predecessor, Deltek Vision, was for many years the de facto back-office standard in the US architecture and engineering (A&E) market, and Deltek has been steadily moving that installed base onto Vantagepoint.

Where it comes from

Deltek, founded in 1983 and based in Herndon, Virginia, has never sold anything but software for project-based businesses and government contractors. Costpoint (government contracting), Ajera (small A&E firms), and ComputerEase (construction accounting) round out the portfolio.

In December 2016, Roper Technologies bought Deltek from private equity firm Thoma Bravo for $2.8 billion, and the company has operated inside the publicly traded Roper group (NYSE: ROP) since. Per Deltek, more than 2,000 firms run Vantagepoint, and the large majority of the biggest US A&E firms use Deltek products in some form.

Modules and capabilities

  • CRM and pipeline management tailored to proposal-driven services firms
  • Resource management: staffing, utilization tracking, and workload forecasting across projects
  • Project planning and delivery with budgets, dashboards, and project KPIs
  • Financial management and billing, including complex project billing terms and multi-company structures
  • Workflow automation plus the Dela AI assistant for insights and routine tasks

Best-fit companies

Size matters less than shape here. A small single-office practice and a multi-office, multi-company organization can both run Vantagepoint; what the product assumes is that revenue arrives through projects. Architecture and engineering firms lead, followed by environmental, management, and IT consulting. The sharper question during evaluation is which Deltek product you belong in: Ajera below for small A&E firms, Costpoint beside it for government contractors with federal cost-accounting requirements, Vantagepoint in the commercial middle.

How it is sold

Cloud first, but not cloud only. Deltek reports over 80 percent of Vantagepoint customers in the Deltek Cloud, with on-premises deployment still available for firms that require it. Pricing is not published; quotes come per user and module through Deltek and its partner network, so budgets rest on direct proposals rather than list prices. Collecting several partner quotes pays off, and the ERP cost guide frames what sits beyond the license line.

Bottom line for buyers

Few systems map as closely to how A&E and consulting firms bill, staff, and account for projects, and the US partner ecosystem around Vantagepoint is unusually deep for a product of this size. Firms with substantial federal contracts and DCAA audit requirements should skip it and evaluate Deltek Costpoint instead. Vision customers face a real migration, not an upgrade — treat it as the trigger for a fresh selection process rather than a formality.

Frequently asked questions

What type of firm is Deltek Vantagepoint best suited for?

The clearest signal is how the firm earns money: if revenue comes from billable project work, Vantagepoint is in its element, whether that means a 20-person architecture studio or a consulting group spanning several offices and legal entities. Deltek positions it between Ajera at the small A&E end and Costpoint for federal contractors, so firm type decides the product as much as firm size does.

Is Vantagepoint cloud-only, or can we run it on-premises?

You can still install it on your own servers, which has become rare among modern project ERPs and matters to firms with strict data-residency policies. In practice the decision is mostly made: Deltek puts more than 80 percent of Vantagepoint customers in its cloud, and new US buyers overwhelmingly take the managed offering with its included updates.

How does Vantagepoint pricing and licensing work?

Expect a quoted price, not a list price; Deltek and its partners size licensing by user and module, and nothing is published as of August 2026. Because implementation, migration, and ongoing support typically cost more than the licenses themselves, comparing vendors on a five-year total cost of ownership basis is more informative than comparing license quotes, and gathering several partner proposals gives you negotiating room.

We are still on Deltek Vision. Is moving to Vantagepoint just an upgrade?

Treat it as a system change with a familiar vendor. Data has to be migrated, workflows rebuilt, and users retrained, and internal hours will rival vendor fees. Firms that get the most out of the move use it to rerun requirements through a structured selection process instead of recreating twenty years of Vision habits on a new platform.

We have federal government contracts. Is Vantagepoint still the right Deltek product?

Usually the answer is Costpoint. Deltek draws the product boundary at federal cost-accounting and DCAA audit rules, which Costpoint handles and Vantagepoint intentionally does not. Firms with a mixed commercial and government book should force that question early in the evaluation, because it decides where the accounting and compliance workflows will live.

How widely is Vantagepoint used?

Deltek's own figure is more than 2,000 firms on Vantagepoint, inside a customer base that covers most of the largest US A&E firms. For a buyer, that scale shows up as peer benchmarking data, user events, and consultants who have seen your problems before.
