What RentalMan is
RentalMan is an enterprise ERP for equipment rental, covering the asset from procurement through utilization, billing and depreciation to disposal. Wynne Systems has sold it since 1991, and it serves as the system of record inside several of the largest heavy equipment rental fleets in North America. This is deliberately not a small-business product.
Vendor, history, ownership
Wynne Systems was founded in January 1991 in Long Beach, California by a small group of programmers writing rental software, and now sits in Irvine with offices in Houston, Toronto and Elland in the United Kingdom. Ownership has changed twice. United Rentals acquired the company in 2000 and ran it as a subsidiary until 2012, when it sold Wynne to Volaris Group, an operating group of Constellation Software. Constellation is a long-hold acquirer that rarely resells, so the ownership question that dogs private-equity-backed vendors is comparatively settled here. In June 2015 Wynne spun out InTempo Software to serve local and regional rental companies, and since then Wynne itself has concentrated on national and multinational accounts. Both entities sell RentalMan, at different ends of the size spectrum, with support models built around customer scale.

Typical customers
Wynne states plainly that it focuses on larger national and international rental customers. In practice that means fleets in the thousands or tens of thousands of assets, spread across dozens or hundreds of branches, frequently in more than one country. Segments include heavy equipment and construction rental, cranes, aerial and access, pump, power, air and climate rental, CAT dealer rental operations and durable medical equipment. Regional operators get routed to InTempo instead.
Deployment and pricing
RentalMan runs hosted or on-premises on an IBM i foundation, with browser and mobile front ends over the top. Pricing is not published and will not be for deals of this size; expect a multi-year enterprise agreement scoped by fleet size, branch count, countries and users. Layered architectures are common at this end of the market, with RentalMan anchoring the rental operation while a corporate finance suite handles group consolidation. Our note on two-tier ERP covers that pattern if it is the shape you are considering.
Our take
If you run a large multi-branch rental fleet and your problem is utilization, depreciation accuracy and billing at volume, RentalMan belongs on a very short list of systems that have demonstrably done it at that scale for three decades. The Constellation ownership is a stability argument, not a growth-story argument, and buyers should read it that way. Who should not buy it: any independent yard under a few hundred assets, where implementation cost and IBM i skills sit wildly out of proportion to the problem. Buyers who want cloud-native architecture, a public API catalog and quarterly feature drops will find the platform conservative by design. Treat the shrinking pool of available IBM i talent as a real constraint over a ten-year horizon, not a footnote in the risk register.
