Overview
ASPEN, from Charter Software, runs the whole of an equipment dealership on one Microsoft-based platform: parts, service, rental, unit sales, and integrated accounting, for dealers in agriculture, construction, rural lifestyle, and golf and turf. Charter, now part of the Constellation Software portfolio, prefers the label business management system over ERP system. Functionally the difference is thin; for a dealership, this is the industry ERP.
Where ASPEN comes from
Charter Software Inc. has been selling to North American equipment dealers for roughly four decades from the Denver metro area. In January 2020 the Toronto-based consolidator Constellation Software Inc. acquired the company and slotted it into the Perseus operating group under the Constellation Dealership Software umbrella, next to sister products Ideal Computer Systems and c-Systems Software, which serve adjacent dealership segments. Branding has since shifted toward ASPEN by Charter, with aspendealers.com as the product's home.
What it covers
Integrated accounting and financial reporting form the core. Parts management brings automated price-file updates covering, per the vendor, more than 400 OEMs and suppliers, plus a parts locator. Service and work orders extend into the field through the ASPEN Mobile technician app; rental fleet management and wholegoods sales round out the departments. TargetCRM adds CRM and customer messaging, ASPENPay processes payments inside the system, and direct integrations connect to the John Deere, Kubota, CNH, AGCO, and Bobcat portals.
Who buys it
Single-store and multi-location equipment dealers and distributors across North America in agriculture, construction, rural lifestyle, and golf and turf — above all dealers whose franchise economics hang on OEM connectivity.
It is not a general-purpose business platform: manufacturers, pure rental houses, and retailers outside the equipment dealership model sit outside the design center.
Licensing, hosting, cost
Today ASPEN ships as a cloud product on vendor-managed servers, with Charter handling backups, security patches, and updates; the Microsoft-based platform historically also ran on dealer-managed Windows servers. There is no public price list. Quotes depend on users, locations, and modules, and implementation, data conversion, and training need their own budget lines on top of the subscription.
Editorial verdict
Strictly speaking, ASPEN is a dealership management system that happens to contain a full ERP core; we list it because the accounting depth and cross-department integration do the same job an industry ERP would. For a US agriculture or construction equipment dealer whose day runs on OEM price files and portal connections, it answers the build-or-bend question (buy the specialist, or force a generic mid-market suite into shape) convincingly in the specialist's favor. Constellation ownership adds a predictable flavor: long holding periods, steady incremental development, little appetite for reinvention. Whether that reads as reassuring or frustrating depends on your roadmap expectations. The fit weakens where OEM connectivity stops mattering — a business that is primarily a rental operation will find focused rental platforms the better starting point in a structured ERP selection process.
