What Signature is

Signature is a service management, job cost, and equipment management suite that runs on Microsoft Dynamics GP, written for mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and other specialty contractors. Contractor operations sit on top: service calls, maintenance agreements, dispatch, field mobility. Underneath them are the general ledger, payables, receivables, and payroll of the Dynamics GP financial system. The installed base among US commercial mechanical and HVAC service firms is substantial, and many of those companies have run Signature for a decade or longer.

The company behind it

WennSoft sits in New Berlin, Wisconsin, and has built software for the specialty trades on Microsoft platforms since the 1990s. The name changed twice: to KEY2ACT in 2016, then back to WennSoft in 2021. That is why the product still shows up under the KEY2ACT label in directories and on review sites. Alongside Signature the company sells FORGE, a cloud-native platform on Microsoft Azure designed to work with Dynamics 365 Business Central, which it has designated as the path beyond Dynamics GP.

Modules and capabilities

Service management covers maintenance contracts and preventive maintenance scheduling, with dispatch handled through a graphical schedule board. Job costing addresses construction and project work, and equipment records carry full service history. Field technicians work in the MobileTech app for work orders, time capture, and signatures; Signature Time handles time and expense entry; a telematics module pulls in vehicle data. The financial core (general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, financial reporting) comes from Dynamics GP, so accounting behaves exactly as GP users already expect.

Who buys it

The classic buyer is a mid-market commercial mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, or electrical contractor running both service and project work. Because the product presumes Dynamics GP underneath, it has historically drawn firms already committed to the Microsoft stack and served by GP partner channels across the United States and Canada.

Deployment and pricing

Signature installs on-premises or in hosted environments alongside Dynamics GP, with several companion modules delivered as cloud services. WennSoft publishes no prices. What you pay depends on the Signature modules licensed, user counts, GP licensing, and hosting arrangements, so a vendor quote is unavoidable. Model the whole stack, including the platform migration that is coming, as part of ERP selection.

Our take

The contractor depth here is real. The platform question still dominates every current evaluation, because Microsoft has scheduled the end of Dynamics GP product support for December 31, 2029, with security updates continuing through April 30, 2031. Existing customers therefore have a defined runway rather than an immediate cliff, and WennSoft is steering them toward FORGE with Business Central. New buyers face a different calculation: choosing Signature today means knowingly adopting a sunset platform, and most should instead evaluate FORGE, other Business Central-based field service products, or construction ERPs on current platforms. The one group with a defensible case is contractors already running Dynamics GP who need this service depth for the remaining support window and have no appetite to change systems twice. Whichever direction you take, data migration planning belongs in the purchase decision rather than after it.

Frequently asked questions

Is WennSoft Signature affected by the end of Microsoft Dynamics GP, and what happens when support runs out?

Signature runs on Microsoft Dynamics GP, so the platform timeline applies to it directly. Microsoft has announced that Dynamics GP product support ends on December 31, 2029, with security updates continuing through April 30, 2031. Existing customers can keep operating inside that window, but a concrete migration plan should exist well before those dates, and new buyers should price the sunset into the purchase decision. The vendor-promoted path afterwards is WennSoft FORGE together with Dynamics 365 Business Central, which keeps both the relationship and the Microsoft ecosystem intact. Alternatives include other field service products built for Business Central, or a move to a construction or field-service ERP on a different current platform. In every scenario the hard part is identical: migrating years of service history, equipment records, and job cost data, so scope that work early and compare it across the candidate paths.

What is WennSoft FORGE and how does it relate to Signature?

FORGE is WennSoft's cloud-native platform, built on Microsoft Azure and designed to work alongside Dynamics 365 Business Central rather than Dynamics GP. The vendor positions it as the forward path for specialty contractors as the GP platform winds down. Signature customers considering the move should request a feature-parity comparison and a written migration roadmap first, because cloud successors rarely replicate a mature on-premises suite one to one on day one.

Why do some listings still call this product KEY2ACT?

The company operated under the KEY2ACT name from 2016 and returned to its original WennSoft brand in 2021. Review platforms and older partner materials were never all updated, so Signature still appears under both names. Same vendor, same product line, which is worth remembering when you compare ratings across directories.

How much does WennSoft Signature cost?

WennSoft does not publish Signature pricing, so a direct quote is the only route to a number. Total cost tracks the Signature modules licensed, user counts, Microsoft Dynamics GP licensing, and whether you run on-premises or hosted. Budget the eventual migration off the GP platform as well, since that expense is effectively built into any new Signature commitment made today.
